For our first initiative, we would like to raise money to support Amanda van der Tuuk from the Buitenhoeve school in the Netherlands (click here for more information) in developing an WQ approach for schools; 'WQforSchools' a toolkit that can be leveraged by all Primary Schools in the Netherlands.
Amanda van der Tuuk (developer of WQforSchools): "The toolkit is to help professionals/ teachers in creating a learning environment in which the wellbeing of themselves and the children develop optimally. The toolkit provides tools for initiating a cultural change in which wellbeing becomes integrated part of education."
WQ Approach "The focus will be on improving the wellbeing of employees, on experiential activities that will experience the (added) value and thus also create the motivation to share this with- and support for- the children. Where can be made use of a wide range of creative and playful, body-oriented activities for children between four and twelve years old. This program will improve our Teachers & Children's wellbeing, stimulating body awareness, self-awareness, resilience and self-esteem for a strong healthy basis in life."
The WQforSchools program consists of 3 phases: 1. Designing a WQ approach at the specific school / child center. 2. Improve the wellbeing of teachers / team members through experiential activities. 3. Translation to the children and their education; - Develop a learning environment and activities around the blocks "feel, eat, move, sleep and relax". - Access to the database with activities, lessons, offers & inspiration.
The WQforSchool programme should help professionals/teachers in creating a learning environment for the children. It will allow them to give concrete form to activities around the blocks Eat, Move, Sleep & Relax in and around the classroom. By deeply embedding the WQforSchool programme at children's center De Buitenhoeve in Eesveen, this can be used as good practice and can guide other professionals.
Reasons to support this initiative 100% of the funding will benefit our children, while the WQforSchools programme will leave a tangible impact on the educational system in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the toolkit will comprise of the 5 building blocks of our WQ journey and this initiative does have the overall societal impact we are looking for.
With the WQforSchools programme we aim to prevent the relapse of young adults who just start their careers. It’s a fact that more and more young adults struggle with finding a balance between work life and private life, which may result in a burn-out. Research has shown that at least 63 percent of a group of 1816 young people aged between 18 and 34 have already visited a psychologist for burn-out complaints. The combination of stress, a high workload, poor health and not being aware of their vitality results in these complaints.
The biggest complaint is that our children are prepared to perform, but not to be creative. It makes our school system unhealthy, according to Erwin Wagenhofer. With our WQforSchools programme we stimulate the creativity of our children and increase their resistance to cope with all challenges in life.
What is needed? In total, we want to raise an amount of €60.000 to create the WQforSchools programme which will be spend on: 1. Man hours for a dedicated team under supervision of Amanda to develop and write the Educational Curriculum 2. Material costs 3. A pilot on the Buitenhoeve, in order to test and evaluate the Educational Curriculum
WQforSchools in action - 5 blocks:
FEEL Your body measures your well-being, giving you valuable information as to the state of your health. In order to understand what your body needs, you must listen to it and you must be able to feel, before you know, if you need to rest, eat or drink. This is why the first block is about FEEL. It also has sub-themes of sensitivity and strength as, in order to feel what your needs are, you must be connected to yourself, sensitive to your own needs and empowered to act on what you feel.
During the block EAT You will become more aware of your body’s signals. You will learn to read these signals so that you know when, and how much, you need to eat or drink. You will develop healthy eating and drinking habits and will learn about how vegetables and fruits grow, as well as how to prepare them. This will increase your commitment, respect, gratitude and even amazement in relation to the food you eat. You will know exactly what you are eating and you will understand why food is so important as fuel and nutrition for your body. You will be more aware as to the quantity of food your body needs each day, and will learn which foods are best for your own body’s needs. You will also understand the importance of drinking water and of actually enjoying healthy eating.
MOVE Regular exercise enables you to perform better, both physically and mentally, by helping to digest your food, regulate your blood sugar level and maintain a happier outlook.
During the block MOVE You will become more aware your body’s signals in relation to its need for physical activity. You will be given the tools to learn to move in many different ways and to experience the benefits of exercising more. You will explore how often you need to move as well as experiencing the joy of exercise.
SLEEP During sleep, you both recover from the day and get yourself ready for a new day. But that is not the only benefit of sleep as it also helps you to improve your memory, creativity and decision-making. If you are a child, it will help you to grow. There are so many benefits to sleeping well that it is important that you value your sleep.
During the block SLEEP You will become more aware of the sleep signals that your own body gives you, and learn how many hours of sleep you need and the right time for you to go to bed. You will explore your own sleeping habits, how you might improve the quality of your sleep so that you more often get a ‘good night’s sleep’, and also the benefits of taking a powernap during the day.
RELAX Your central nervous system enables important information to reach your brain. It does this more effectively if you are not experiencing too much stress. As you cannot avoid a certain amount of stress in your life, it is important that you learn how to relax so that your brain can function at its best. However, you may find it difficult to know when you need to relax and how to do so.
During the block RELAX You will become more aware of the signals your body gives about how stressed or relaxed you are feeling. You will learn what stress is, what things raise stress-levels (including the impact of social media) and how you can reduce the stress you are experiencing. You will learn why relaxing is important, and will experience and discover different ways to relax. You will be given relaxation tools as well as tips and tricks to recharge your body’s ‘battery’.
